Cakewalks in Oxford

As part of the Adventures Abroad part of my Be Your Own Bae agenda, I’d like to introduce my Cakewalk project. The idea was inspired by my coworker back home.

For some reason, at work I’d brought up the idea of a traditional cakewalk – you know, a lot like musical chairs, but the person who lands on the one square gets to pick a cake? – but my coworker had never heard of traditional cake walks, and she assumed that a cakewalk was “like a pub crawl, but with cake”. A group would walk from bakery to bakery, admiring the goods and picking out what looked tastiest, eating, and then walking on to the next bakery. Sugar rush is an added bonus.

Well, I don’t know about you, but to me that sounded like absolute heaven. What better way to get to know a city than through it’s cakes and bakeries? And so, without further ado, I submit to you, my reader, the list of bakeries in Oxford that are on my list (so far).

    1. Ben’s Cookies – located in Covered Market
    2. Gatineau
    3. Gail’s Bakery (locations in Summertown and Jericho)
    4. Modern Baker
    5. Millefeuille
    6. Barefoot Bakery – I went here with a course mate but didn’t think to take pictures so I will have to go back 😉

Over the course of the next few weeks, I will try to check them off. There is also a cake society here at Brookes so I might have to ask them for recommendations. Exciting!

Thanks for reading, and please feel free to comment with your favorite kind of cake!

  1. Great idea Kira – I never knew cake walls were an actual thing! So cool! I can’t wait to hear about all of your adventures- my mouth is watering now! I think my favorite cake would have to either be the traditional “crumb cake” powdered that is from Mueller ‘s bakery or a cake from my childhood- gingerbread cake made in the shape of a gingerbread man with real whipped cream 😊. I have such fond memories of both my childhood and parenthood when I reflect on both of these options 😊❤️ I’m looking forward to hearing about your cake adventures – ( I just hope the cakes don’t give you “the crummies” !!! CHEERS! ❤️🍰
